History of the Cochrane, AB Area
The town of Cochrane was named after Senator Matthew Henry Cochrane who established the Cochrane Ranch in 1881. Despite the surrounding ranching population, few people chose to make Cochrane their home until the early 1900s. In the 5-year span between 1906 and 1911, the population of the town more than doubled. The Historic Cochrane Ranche Site, the location of Alberta’s first large-scale livestock operation, remains open year-round to this day. It is now a 136-acre public park with picnic tables, fire pits, and an outdoor stage. In addition, the Historic Westerson Cabin offers a variety of free cultural and heritage demonstrations during the Farmer’s market on Saturdays throughout the summer months.
